Gary E. Merenstein established his own law practice, “Gary Merenstein, Attorney at Law” in October of 1990 in Boulder, Colorado, where he now practices consumer protection, tax law, conservatorships, guardianships, mental health law, and litigation.

Merenstein has been recognized for his work representing consumers subjected to abusive debt collection practices under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and also defending consumers in debt collection cases. Gary Merenstein has also worked representing consumers in breach of warranty, truth in lending, unfair trade practices, auto repossession, and foreclosure cases. His experience, in addition, includes tax return preparation and advising consumers regarding tax matters.  Mr. Merenstein has conducted approximately 130 court trials since he started practicing.

Gary E. Merenstein’s name is not unknown in the state, as he was one of the main forces behind establishing the consumer legal standard of review to be used in Colorado Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (“CFDCPA”) cases when courts or juries determine whether a dunning notice complies with the CFDCPA, and was one of the attorneys responsible for the Colorado Supreme Court decision in Flood v. Mercantile Adjustment Bureau. This landmark Colorado case also established the standard that debt collectors must comply with under the CFDCPA in regard to the legality of language in debt collectors’ validation notices sent to consumers. Gary Merenstein’s accomplishments do not end there, as he also co-counseled approximately 20 consumer protection class actions, and also served as co-counsel in several reported decisions.  Mr. Merenstein has served as sole counsel, lead counsel or co-counsel in cases which have resulted in over $100 million dollars in total recovery for consumers.

Merenstein is a member of the National Association of Consumer Advocates, the Boulder County Bar Association, and the Colorado Bar Association.

Mr. Merenstein is the 2021-2022 Recipient of the annual John Marshall Award given by the Colorado Legal Services Program to attorneys in Colorado for their dedication in providing legal services to Low Income and Senior Clients.
